(Almost) A Year of Travel

It was a big decision to take a year off travel around the world. Part of it was the planning: where to go and how to get there? Connecting country to country and making everything work took some planning but overall it turned out well. Things have been cut short, but it was a great journey while it lasted. For now we’ll have to wait awhile to find out where we go next.

When planning the series of trips we decided to focus on a few different regions. In the summer of 2019 it would be mostly Central Europe. In the fall it would be countries around the Mediterranean. In the winter it would be Southeast Asia, and we left the spring and summer open. The idea was to hit the countries during ideal weather conditions. Until the Spring it went well, as we experienced a handful of rainy days after over 110 days of travel.

Unfortunately things were cut short in March due to that coronavirus we’re all dealing with right now. When things because serious and Trudeau made the announcement for Canadians to come home, we were in Krabi, Thailand. We were originally booked to go to Koh Samui for a week before our scheduled flight to Bangkok and then to Toronto on the 27th. Instead, we kept the flight to Koh Samui but flew out of the island a couple hours later back to Bangkok before taking a flight to Toronto the next day (the 20th). And then it was self-isolation for two weeks!

Most of the blog posts for now will focus on the trips from this past year, although I will add a few others from previous trips from time to time. If you click on the menu button (three lines) at top right, the three main trips are highlighted under the headings of Europe, Asia and Africa. It includes maps of the itineraries we did. Individual posts can be found in the drop down arrows to the right. New posts will always appear on the main page as well. You are welcome to leave a comment or question anytime!

At Samui Airport…briefly. We visited six of the places listed on the signs
It’s empty at the departure lounge in Koh Samui
At Bangkok airport the next day, ready to return home
The quiet departure lounge at Hong Kong airport before the flight to Vancouver on March 20th

    1. Thanks Carole, I’m glad you are enjoying them. It’s been a lot of fun making them–it really brings back memories of the places we visited.
