This part of the trip was a continuation of our trip south from our cabin just outside Egilsstaðir to our next accommodation at Höfn. We had come down Highway 939 earlier in the day and were continuing a long day of driving.
On this day the sun never really came out but patches of blue skies would appear from time to time. The weather had been cold for most of the eastern portion of the trip, but as we made our way along the coast the late July weather began to warm up a bit.
- Thvotta (Þvottá)
- Fauskasandur
- Hvlanes
- Almannaskarð

Our first stop was Thvotta, a series of rock formation located near a farmhouse that was a source of early Icelandic missionary work. According to the information on the signs, the missionaries had come from Norway.

All along the highway there were places to park the car and check out the beaches. Sometimes there was a car or two around but much of the time it was quiet.

With a huge monolith rising from the water just off of the black sand beach, Fauskasandur had a striking appearance.

Hvlanes is a small, low peninsula with a black pebble beach that stretches for a few kilometres. It was located right by the highway so we stopped and walked around.

There was a rough drive up a gravel path next to a tunnel near Höfn. It took us to a look-out spot with views of Höfn and the coast in the distance.

Eventually we arrived at our cabin. Not only was it clean and spacious, but the location was out of this world.

After briefly dropping off our stuff we headed into town to pick up food for dinner as it was already well into the evening. The supermarket was a mad rush of tourists grabbing whatever grilling foods they could, from fish to sausages. The fridges in the meat department were rapidly becoming bare, but Kim spotted a local lamb tenderloin. With a grill available it was an easy choice.

We were just there for one night before moving westward once again towards our final accommodations just outside the Golden Circle. We had already enjoyed this section of the trip immensely, but there was much more to see on our drive the next day.
Random Notes:
-it wasn’t until Höfn that we once again experienced large numbers of tourists. Between Myvatn and Höfn things were very quiet. We missed out on some parts of the eastern coast, and would like to check out more of the towns there on a return visit
-gas stations, supermarkets and washrooms were sparser in this section of the trip so it’s important to check your gas and snack supplies!
